For institutions

Review how work was produced.

Authmarks gives instructors a verifiable, tamper-evident record of how student work was written — labelled by character, attested by name, and sealed before submission. No detection scores. Evidence to review, not a verdict to accept.

The core principle

Institutions are dropping AI detectors after false positives and contested hearings. The need to show who did the work has not gone away. A provenance record gives instructors evidence they can discuss — under their own policies, not an algorithm's verdict.

How it works

From writing to sealed submission

01Student

Write with consent

The student installs the browser extension (free) and opens their Google Docs or Word document. They consent to recording for that document. Recording is off by default, and the student can pause or stop at any time.

02Student

Attest before sealing

When the draft is ready, the student reviews the writing record — a labelled history of what was typed, pasted, automated, or untracked. They accept responsibility for the record, then seal it. The seal is locked until they do.

03Instructor

Receive and review

A submission link arrives — through the LMS gradebook if LTI is connected, or shared directly. The instructor opens the sealed record: a tamper-evident package they can check independently. They see the complete labelled writing history, including any sections the record did not capture (marked as unknown provenance, not omitted). Where available, Authmarks flags potential voice inconsistencies for review; authorised reviewers can listen to relevant retained recordings to investigate. A flag is not a finding of misconduct.

04Institution

Policy and triage

The Action Center gives instructors a class-level view of sealed records — a triage tool, not an accusation engine. Org policies, standing controls, and retention settings are configured at the institution level.

The evidence in depth

What the writing record contains

Character-level lifecycle

Every insertion, deletion, and replacement is labelled in sequence — not just the final text. The record shows how the document evolved: what was typed, what was deleted, what was pasted in, what was accepted from a suggestion, and what was produced without a person at the keyboard. Deletions and replacements are part of the record, not hidden.

Full-document accounting

Text that was not observed — written before recording started, or while recording was off — is marked as having unknown provenance. It is present in the document; the record is honest that it did not see it arrive. This means the full document is accounted for: either a character has a provenance label, or it is explicitly marked unknown. Nothing is silently omitted.

Multi-source reconciliation

Where multiple capture surfaces were active — browser extension and desktop app, for example — the signals are reconciled into one record. Each source contributes its observed events; the combined record is what gets sealed.

Writer view vs reviewer view

Writers see their own record: the labelled history of their session. Institutional reviewers with permission see the fuller record — the complete labelled history, untracked sections explicitly marked, and retained recordings where voice dictation was captured and the institution's retention policy covers them. Where available, Authmarks flags potential voice inconsistencies; reviewers listen to the recordings to investigate. A flag is not a finding of misconduct. Reviewers do not have access to the writer's other documents or sessions.

Students — free account

What students use for free

Every student gets a free Authmarks account — sign in with Google, no card. The tools they need to record and seal work are all free.

  • Browser extension for Google Docs and Word — free
  • Desktop app (Windows, macOS, Linux) — free
  • Authmarks web and desktop editor — free
  • Free account: sign in with Google, no card required

Institutions — scoped with you

What institutions pay for

The institution's plan adds the workflow and policy layer on top of what every student already captures for free. Pricing is scoped to seats, integrations, and retention needs.

  • LMS integration via LTI 1.3 — Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Schoology, Moodle
  • Action Center: class-level triage designed for instructors, not accusations
  • Organisation roles, policies, and standing-policy controls
  • Write-event log and replay review tier for deeper review
  • Retention and storage controls to match your records policy
  • In-region hosting and organisation-held keys as enterprise options

LMS integration

One LTI 1.3 registration, any LMS

Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Schoology, and Moodle all connect via a single standard LTI 1.3 registration. Sealed records arrive through the gradebook with no new tool for students to learn.

What LMS integration adds

  • Assignments linked directly from the course
  • Sealed record submissions arrive in the gradebook
  • Students launch Authmarks from within the LMS without a separate sign-in step
  • Instructor sees a link to the verified record from each submission

Getting set up

Register the tool once, activate with us, and it is ready. Full step-by-step instructions for each platform — including the four endpoint URLs and per-LMS configuration steps — are on the LMS integration page.

What the evidence shows — and what it does not

What a sealed record establishes

  • The text was observed being written, character by character, during the session
  • Each character is labelled: typed, pasted, automated, or untracked
  • A named person reviewed and attested before sealing
  • The sealed file has not changed since it was sealed (verifiable by anyone)

What it does not establish alone

  • Whether all text in the document was recorded (untracked text is marked, not invented)
  • A finding of misconduct — that is for the instructor and the institution's policies
  • The identity of the typist beyond the signed-in Authmarks account

Authmarks provides evidence for a reviewer to assess. It does not make decisions. A valid seal confirms the record has not been tampered with since sealing; it does not guarantee every claim in the attestation is true.
